Leaving and Cleaving - Understood after 4 years

Starting a family in a community where water has to be fetched from a nearby manual pump and a house wher e rain passed through the roof was very challenging, specially with a beautiful wife in my side. We started our marriage life in an old rented house (P200 per month) living with my eldest sister and brother. It was not a well planned relationship.

As the days, weeks and months goes by, marriage fight has become part of our weekly lives. Our relationship with my sister and brother was also on shaky ground. They normally see negative things about my wife, and my wife also see negative things about them. Well, I blamed it to the priest who did not explain to us what God said in Gen. 2:24 - “Leave you Mother and Father and be united as one Flesh”. We thought we were not covered by the command since we were not living with our parents but with my sister and brother.  Or, was it me not paying attention because I was focused on my wife, well who can blame me. It was only after a few years that we understood that it is physically leaving the old house and building a new family in a new home, where I will be the Head.

Compromise was our way of life during the  Sunday worship. She would attend the Catholic Mass for 2 Sundays of a month and I would be with her attending a Christian service the following Sundays. Both my wife and I worked in Makati but for four years we felt that our relationship was not improving in almost all aspect (financial, emotional, and spiritual) but seems to be turning for the worst. It seems that the favor of God was being withheld from us. We lost our second child from miscarriage and the unborn child could have been a boy. There were lots of questions in our mind.

It was in those trying times that God started to work on us to bring us back to Him. A few months after we lost our second child, we decided to move to a new house in the coming months. We prayed for provision and truly God answered us and by His Grace he also gave us a new gift with my wife becoming pregnant. God has not promised us all the answers but He has promised grace..

While on her third month  of pregnancy (January, 1996), we moved to our new home. It was then that we realized that we are now one as a family. We were like newly weds. I realized that I’m the head of the family and my wife is the queen. We also decided to attend a Christian Church in Makati named Word for the World Christian Fellowship. After 2 ½ years we started attending Couples Ministry. From 1996 until now, God has been blessing us and bestowing favors on us. God used the couple’s ministry and the church to mold us and called us for His Glory.
